Orediggers begin season with 33-0 shutout victory at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. - Colorado School of Mines defeated William Jewell College by the score of 33-0 on Saturday afternoon, September 3rd, in NCAA Division II football action at Greene Stadium.  BOX SCORE

Cody Renken caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Clay Garcia midway through the first quarter (8:43; kick failed) to begin CSM's scoring on Saturday.  Garcia tossed an eight-yard scoring pass to Tevin Champagne at 9:57 in the second period (kick failed) and Dan Palmer found the endzone on a four-yard jaunt with 46 seconds remaining in the first half to give CSM a 19-0 lead at the intermission.

Palmer added two more touchdown runs in the third quarter, one from six yards and the other from one yard, to close out the scoring.

Palmer finished with 22 carries for 134 yards (6.1 avg.) and Garcia completed 14-of-21 passes for 149 yards as the Orediggers (1-0 overall) amassed 369 yards of total offense.  The CSM defense held William Jewell to just 121 yards of total offense.

Renken (52 yards receiving) and Diamond Gillis finished with four receptions apiece while Alex Laudenslager (one sack, two TFL, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery) led Mines with nine total tackles.  Ryan Wood and Alex Vigil (one sack, 1.5 TFL) each had five tackles while Tyler Palmer and Justin Neal both came away with interceptions.

Taylor Accardi, who had an 84-yard punt, averaged 60.0 yards on two boots and Russell Barrios converted on all three of his extra-point tries.

Kurt Webster and Nathan Valentine both had nine total tackles as the Cardinals saw their record to slip to 1-1.

Mines (1-0 overall) will host South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Saturday afternoon, September 10th, at 12:00 p.m. (MT) in Golden, Colo.
