RMAC Champs! Knous, Mines Claim Titles!

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Led by three golfers in the top 10 overall, including individual medalist Jim Knous, the Colorado School of Mines golf team captured the fourth conference championship in school history after dominating the 10-team field by 15 strokes at the RMAC Spring Championship on Tuesday at the Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The Orediggers earned their first conference championship since capturing the team title in 1968. Mines also won titles in 1965 and 1967.

The victory also assures the squad of a spot in the upcoming NCAA West / Central Super Regional at the same course on May 7-9 in Litchfield Park. The Orediggers are currently ranked No. 1 in the Central Region, and will play for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships which will be held on May 15-19 at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.

Despite each golfer seeing his score increase on the last day, Mines' team score of 900 (294-295-311-900) still bested Colorado Mesa and Western New Mexico by 15 strokes for the top spot overall. This is the third-straight team title for the Orediggers and their sixth overall of the season.

Knous captured his fourth individual title of the season after closing out his tournament with a 75 on his final round (74-71-75-220) to take the overall individual title by one stroke over teammate Cory Bacon, who led after the first round.

Bacon finished in a tie for second with David Metz of Western New Mexico after posting a 221 (69-75-77-221) during the three rounds. He held a one-stroke advantage over Knous heading into the final round, but a final-round 77 left him in a tie for runner-up honors. He and Knous both earned spots on the All-Tournament team for finishing in the top five overall.

Kyle Grassel posted a top 10 finish after a final round score of 82 (72-74-82-228) left him in a tie for 10th overall.

Michael Lee carded a 79 (80-75-79-228) during Tuesday's finale to finish in a tie for 20th overall while Jordan Arndt added an 80 (79-76-80-235) during the third round.

The Orediggers will next be in action at the NCAA West / Central Super Regional at the Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park on May 7-9.
