Mines Preps For NCAA D2 West/Central Super Regional
GOLDEN - The Colorado School of Mines golf squad will open up the NCAA Division II West/Central Super Region Tournament on Monday, May 7, 2012, at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The Orediggers are in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in program history after claiming six team titles, including the 2012 RMAC Spring Championship, en route to earning the No. 1 seed in the Central Region.
The squad claimed the program's first conference title since the 1968 season, and the fourth overall in school history, after topping the 10-team field by 15 strokes at the RMAC Spring Championship on April 16-17 in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Mines put all five of its golfers in the top 25 individuals, including medalist honors for senior Jim Knous.
The regional tournament will be held at the same resort as the 2012 RMAC Spring Championship.
Knous was named First Team All-RMAC for the fourth-straight season and was also named the 2012 RMAC Player of the Year. Sophomore Michael Lee was named Second Team All-RMAC and senior Cory Bacon and sophomore Kyle Grassel were both named Third Team All-RMAC.
Head coach Tyler Kimble was named the RMAC Coach of the Year after leading his team to wins in three of the four RMAC events, including a three-title winning streak to head into the regional tournament.
Mines enters the regional having won its last three tournaments and the team has not finished outside of the top three teams at any event this year.
