Baker nets game-winner in OT as Mines advances in RMAC Tournament

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team needed overtime but came out on top with a 2-1 victory over UC-Colorado Springs in the quarterfinal round of the RMAC Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium.

Both teams had very few chances early in the match the best chance for Mines came in the 14th minute when Zach Page-Belknap collected a ball in the box hitting a shot to the far post that missed just wide.

Mines would take the lead in the 31st minute as Tesho Akindele played a ball into the box to find Alex Gunberg sprinting in for the finish for his fourth goal of the season.

Mash Shaswar missed just high and to the right off a free kick from the edge of the box for UCCS in the 32nd minute but CSM took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Mountain Lions picked up the pressure in the second half and nearly tied the game in the 46th minute when the ball dropped to Matt Friesen right in front of the goal off a corner but Cale Haas was there to block the ball.
 
Sean Helster hit a shot from 30 yards out that UCCS goalkeeper Brandon Costa tipped over the crossbar in the 75th minute.
 
UCCS tied the game in the 82nd minute after the Orediggers failed to clear the ball Shawsar beat the goalkeeper far post.
Mines came close to winning in regulation in the 84th minute on a free kick that found Baski Baker at the far post but a UCCS defender headed the ball off the line.

Baker would get the game-winner though just a minute and 38 seconds in overtime as Akindele hit Baker over the top and Baker shot back far post for his eight goal of the season. The assist was Akindele's 11th of the year.

The Orediggers (11-6-1) will play #1 seed and 3rd-ranked Fort Lewis on Friday, Nov. 4th at 3:00 pm in Durango in the semifinal round of the RMAC Tournament.
