CSM women register 78-74 victory at Regis University


DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team held off Regis University for a 78-74 victory, its first win at the Regis Fieldhouse since the 2005-06 season, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action (RMAC) on Saturday evening.

The two teams traded baskets in a first half that saw six lead changes and six ties. CSM led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took an eight point lead into the break.

The Orediggers held a 12-point lead, their largest of the game, when Angie Charchalis drained a three pointer with 10:44 remaining in the game. Regis answered going on an 18-6 run and tied the game with 5:34 on the clock on a Tae’lor Purdy three-point basket.

Brecca Gaffney made one of two free throws and Mines took a one-point lead with 4:33 on the clock but RU answered and tied the game converting one of two free throws. A steal by Emily Dalton led to a fastbreak layup and once again the Rangers came back to tie the score at 72 with 2:49 left in the game.

Charchalis found herself at the line with 1:17 on the clock and made her first throw but missed the second. Gaffney came down with the rebound and found Charchalis for the jumper increasing Mines’ lead to three points with just under a minute remaining in the game. Regis would cut their deficit to two points with 11 seconds remaining but Stephanie Fogle and Kait Soehner each made free throws in the final seconds to help secure the win.

Regis (9-10, 2-9 RMAC) was 7-for-10 from the three-point line in the second half and made 11 three pointers in the game. Tae’lor Purdy finished with 21 points (7-for-13 FG), six rebounds and six assists. Chelsea Porter was 5-for-8 from the three-point line as she finished with 20 points. Salina Kuiper and Emily Kuipers each finished with 10 points.

CSM held a 49 to 31 advantage on the boards pulling down 23 offensive rebounds. Angie Charchalis scored a career-high 27 points, as she scored 20 or more points for the third time in the last four games. Stephanie Fogle tied her career-high as she finished with 14 points and four assists and was perfect from the three-point line (3-for-3). Katie Carty added eight points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Orediggers (13-6, 7-4 RMAC) will play at Colorado Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd at 6:00 pm. Mines will return home to face UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday, Feb. 6th at 6:00 pm.
